Choosing a Luggage and Maintenance Tips

Warning!

This may prick your ears (and eyes, of course) if you are from the new school. Please exit immediately. (And sellers too.)

This a advise from an OLD Schooler. (Not Scholar definitely)

This is not intended to delve into the aesthetic aspect of choosing a luggage nor the usage aspect.

Strictly on the technical aspect.

1) Shell
This is perhaps the most important part of a trolley bag. We all know how the airport luggage handler handles luggages. So the shell should at least feel and look solid. I am not suggesting buy one armour plated,  but you know, corrugated, honeycombed, strategically reinforced.

2) Extendable handle
Although not absolutely indispensible, it is absolutely easier to drag or guide a trolley with the handle extended. Don't choose a flamingo legged handles. No matter what is guaranteed. If you can, get one elephant legged.

3) Rollers
This is just as important as the shell. Without a smooth working roller, you will be just carrying a luggage with extra weights of the roller assembly. Choose one with rollers that has got steel ball bearings. I doubt currently you can get any, even with a budget of say $200. It makes a big, dramatic difference in the performance and utility of the luggage.

A disintegrating 'self lubricating roller' sent in for replacement. Most, if not,
all, luggages on the current market are installed with these.

Finally found one with steel ball bearing. In the $500 to $1000 range. Dwarfed when picture together with (again) old school steel ball bearing.

4) 2 roller, 4 rollers or 8 rollers?
It all depends on your walking habits and the condition of the track.

4 and 8 rollers are for smooth track and leisurely walking pace. Perhaps 8 wheelers offer better stability...

2 rollers are far more versatile and suited for brisk walking.
Many drag the 4 and 8 rollers like a 2 rollers without realizing the strain on the 2 rear wheels. Most 4 wheelers are not designed for dragging on 2 wheels.

Choose a hybrid if you want the best of both world. 2 large rollers on the rear with 2 smaller rollers on the front. :)

A Hybrid

Maintenance tips
Oiling- all movable parts should be periodically oiled to maximise the useful life.
Cleaning - the wheels should be periodically cleaned to remove dirt, fur and hair/thread caught as these would impede the movement of the wheels

PS. This is the observation and personal opinion of the blogger.
